ARKANSAS, USA — As the newest member of the 5NEWS weather team, Stephen Abshire is excited to forecast all the weather that Arkansas can throw at him.
Stephen was born in New York but grew up in the suburbs of Indianapolis before attending Purdue University. There, he received his B.S in atmospheric science while also studying communication and environmental politics.
Afterward, he spent a month traveling through Europe with his girlfriend, Caroline, before returning to the states to join the 5NEWS weather team.
Because he grew up in the Midwest, Stephen is no stranger to severe weather. He became fascinated by storms as a kid, especially when it came to snow. This may derive from his hopes that school would be canceled, but nonetheless, the interest stuck, and he began broadcasting weather in high school.
In college, he covered a winter storm that dumped 15 inches of snow on the Purdue campus and canceled school for two days. He also had the opportunity to provide live forecasts for campus events like Big Ten games and to work for a student-run news broadcast.
Stephen loves to spend time outside biking and hiking and is excited to explore all the beautiful areas that Arkansas has to offer.
