The body of a fallen soldier has been returned to the River Valley.

Sgt. Vincent Owen's body was flown to the 188th Air National Guard Base in Fort Smith Wednesday morning, where a small ceremony was held with his family. Arkansas State Police, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, and a motorcycle group to Mallory-Martin Funeral Home in Spiro.

The 21-year-old's memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Friday at the Victory Worship Center in Spiro. He will then be buried at the Fort Smith National Cemetery.

Sgt. Owens was killed in Afghanistan last Monday when enemy forces fired on his vehicle in Yosuf Khel. He went to school in Keota, Spiro, Stigler and Van Buren, according to a family member. Sgt. Owens also lived in Fort Smith with his wife.

The funeral procession is scheduled to leave Spiro between 3:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Friday. It will drive east on US 271 to Oklahoma Highway 9A then continue into Arkoma, Oklahoma where it will come into Fort Smith on S. "Y" Street. Fort Smith Police say it will continue from Wheeler Avenue north, to the National Cemetery sometime between 3:40 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The Fort Smith Police Department will provide local traffic control and shut Wheeler Avenue for the procession.

Those wishing to pay their respects to the fallen soldier are encouraged to line up along the sides of Wheeler.
