A teacher in the Elkins School District has been arrested in Fayetteville for having sex with a student.
David Paschal, 36, was a history teacher at Elkins High School. He was arrested for having sex with a female student. He has been charged with four counts of Second Degree Sexual Assault.
The student was 18-years-old. Under state law it's illegal for a teacher to have sexual contact with any student 20 years or younger.
"I just don't see how anyone would want to have sex with an older man like that, especially him," said Kayleigh Harriman, a former student of Paschal's.
She said she is not surprised Paschal was arrested for the crime. "He would talk to girls in a weird way, he would text girls and act like he really liked them, it kind of freaked me out, I stayed away from him," said Harriman.
According to the police report, Paschal first recruited the student to baby sit for him in October. By December it had escalated into a physical relationship.
Paschal also sent the student provocative messages through cell phone texts and Facebook. Harriman said she even saw inappropriate physical contact with girls in the hallways.
"He would touch them, give them hugs, it was kind of weird, I don't understand why he did it," said Harriman.
The student said Paschal told her not to tell anyone about their relationship or she would get hurt. In May, after having sex with Paschal four or five times, the student went to police for protection.
During the investigation Paschal told police there were two other students he was also sending inappropriate messages to. One of them was his current baby sitter. Paschal said he had "considered crossing the line," with her as well.
Harriman said it was no secret around school that Paschal was a creep. "People would always say if you wear a low cut shirt you'd get a good grade in there and that's what a lot of people did so you would get a good grade in there, because they know he liked it," said Harriman.
The Elkins School District would not comment regarding this case Thursday. They said the only person who could speak on it was their superintendent and he was not in the office that day.
