Freezing rain causes ice in parts of Benton County

Many trees in parts of Gateway and Garfield couldn’t handle the weight of the ice, causing some major limbs to break.

BENTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS, Ark. — Early Friday (Jan. 1) morning freezing rain made its way to parts of Northeast Benton County.

The below freezing temperatures caused the rain to turn into ice, coating the trees with a white frost.

Many trees in parts of Gateway and Garfield couldn’t handle the weight of the ice, causing some major limbs to break.

One limb in Gateway came incredibly close to crashing through one couple's home, but thankfully there was only minor damage.

“If it would have come a few feet closer it would have came right through the bedroom,” said homeowner Lonnie Barnett.

Some homeowners in the area say they are going to wait for all the ice to melt before working with the city to clean the debris.

Benton County emergency managers say they have crews who are available to clean any fallen limbs off the major roads.

Since the ice storm was not widespread, an advisory was not sent out to the Benton County community.
