Walmart account sends emails with racial slurs, company says 'bad actor' is culprit

Walmart says their internal systems were not breached, and they were able to stop more of the emails from being sent.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Some people took to social media upset Monday after receiving an email with racial slurs from a Walmart account.

A source outside the company created new accounts using people's emails that were not registered with Walmart to send a "Welcome to Walmart" email from the address "help@walmart.com." that replaced the recipients' name with the n-word.

"We discovered that an external bad actor created false Walmart accounts with obvious intent to offend our customers," a Walmart spokesperson said to CBS MoneyWatch. "We were shocked and appalled to see these offensive and unacceptable emails. We're looking into our sign-up process to ensure something like this doesn't happen again. We're also looking into all available means to hold those responsible accountable."

Walmart says their internal systems were not breached, and they were able to stop more of the emails from being sent, CBS News reports.
